Songs as immediately arresting as 'Sway' don't just appear out of thin air, which leads us to think that Carvell has been in the game for longer than his newcomer status might suggest. Anyway, from what we can glean from his Facebook, he toured the UK - albeit briefly - at the back end of summer, but that's about it. So far, so mysterious. To the music then, 'Sway' pitches Carvell on the same level as another of our favourite brooding indie-rock outfits, Blaenavon, with hefty verse after hefty verse clashing into even chunkier choruses, built of jagged ribboned lead guitar, gravelly vocal harmonies and shattering cymbals. It's simple, but it has the swagger of a far more accomplished band. We can't wait to hear more. - DC
